It's not just urban design; it's intergenerational justice. At Huasipichanga, we reclaim the right to play and to safe mobility, empowering communities to become guardians of their own environment.
The Streets for Kids program aims to improve the well-being of children living in urban areas. The initiative, led by the Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI), inspires leaders, educates professionals, and empowers communities to see cities from the perspective of children and their caregivers. The program encourages action in the streets to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and safer future.
Huasipichanga, with the strong support of the neighboring school Pinceles y Margaritas, as well as the school staff, students, and the local community, carried out a pilot project that redesigned the street and implemented an urban pedagogy strategy. This strategy focused on educating children about their right to the city and on training public servants in inclusive governance strategies for mobility.

Redesign with Purpose 🔥

Streets for Kids: Transforming the city with children
On January 23, 2025, within the framework of the Safe and Sound Cities Encounter, we held a special event to show how the Streets for Kids project has improved public space, making it safer and more fun for children. 🚸🏙️
This international gathering, organized by the Safe and Sound Cities Cuenca program (S2Cities), brought together leaders, placemakers, experts, young people, academics, and key actors to reflect and act around the development of healthy, inclusive, and resilient cities. It was also part of the World Forum of Intermediate Cities, with Cuenca hosting the first edition of the Cities in Placemaking program in the Americas. 🏙️

During the event, we held the Walking Tour, where visitors from different countries and organizations toured the city to get an up-close look at the projects driven by Huasipichanga and their impact on the community.

At one of the most inspiring stops, we held an activation with the children and young people of the Pinceles y Margaritas School, who, with paintbrushes in hand, imagined and painted the city they dream of living in: with more green spaces, safe streets, and places where they can play freely.
This event was a reminder that when we design cities with children in mind, we create better spaces for everyone.

The transformation continues! School Environments 2.0 🚀
We are very excited to announce the start of the second phase of Streets for Kids at the Eugenio Espejo School. This new chapter will directly benefit more than +500 children, also impacting the entire community, families, and neighbors of the area.
